Choosing large wall art for a living room is the quickest way to change a house without moving a single piece of furniture. A wide, blank wall asks for something with presence, and one original canvas, made by hand, becomes the focal point of the room: it draws the eye, gives the space scale and brings calm. In her studio in Ibiza town, Adriana Fernández paints big abstract works in acrylic with matter and relief, inspired by the Mediterranean and made for real living rooms and dining areas. Each canvas is unique, signed by the artist and goes straight onto the wall, with nothing to frame.
Living room art, not wall art decor: why one big canvas changes the room
In most homes the main living room wall is the one behind the sofa or the one you face as you walk in. Fill it with lots of small decorative pieces and the result feels fragmented. One large-scale work does the opposite: it creates balance, gives the room a centre and lets the space breathe. Its impact doesn’t come from shouting, but from dressing the wall naturally, with personality and without clutter. Good wall art for living room walls is less about filling space than about giving it a centre.
One big canvas or several wall pictures for living room walls?
One piece with presence beats a cluster of small frames, and that is why so many people choose the artwork before the rest of the living room decor: sofa, rug, floor lamp and cushions all find their place once the wall has a piece that sets the tone. The best piece is not the one that stands out most in a photo, but the one that still feels right years later. Choosing art for the living room is, in the end, choosing the atmosphere of the whole house.
Modern canvas in large sizes: up to 2 metres, and bigger on commission
This is one of the clearest differences from mass-produced decor. Adriana regularly paints formats up to 2 metres wide, and if your wall needs it, she paints even larger works on commission. An oversized canvas for a double-height lounge, or for a wall of four or five metres, is planned to measure: made to order around the exact width and height of your space, whether it calls for a tall vertical piece or a horizontal one of more than two metres.
The 13 pieces of the Mediterranean Collection 2026 come in several sizes, reaching 160×80 cm with Silencio de Horizonte, built up in textures with acrylic glazes. Beyond that, larger formats are painted as a commission made to fit your wall, in the same abstract language. For the stylistic side, see the big abstract paintings.
What size wall art for a large living room?
It starts with a tape measure. There is no universal size, but these guidelines work in almost all living rooms:
- Above the sofa: the work should span around two-thirds of the sofa’s width; over a 240 cm sofa, a canvas about 160 cm wide looks right. More in the guide to art above the sofa.
- Gap above the furniture: 15 to 25 cm between the sofa back and the bottom edge, so both read as one group.
- Hanging a canvas on a free wall: its centre sits about 145 to 155 cm from the floor, at eye level.
- Blank walls with no furniture: let the work cover half to two-thirds of the free space, leaving air either side.
In a spacious room, make the wall art large enough to hold its own from across the room. If you need a canvas for living room walls wider than the sofa rule allows, every standard measurement is explained in the size guide for large formats.
Horizontal abstract, panoramic, vertical or diptych
A horizontal canvas follows the line of the sofa and visually lengthens the wall; a wide format echoes the horizon. A vertical canvas gains height in living rooms with narrow walls, beside a window or under high ceilings. A diptych spreads one composition over two canvases and adds rhythm on spacious walls, as in Equilibrio en Movimiento (two vertical pieces of 50×70 cm) or Equilibrio (two of 60×50 cm), with 5 to 10 cm between panels. A triptych takes the same idea to three panels; the differences are explained in the guide to multi-panel art. It gives you the rhythm of several pieces without having to create a gallery wall.
Dining areas, open-plan interiors and double-height living rooms
In the dining area the reference is the dining table, not the sofa. A canvas above the table or an art deco sideboard works when it is close to two-thirds of the furniture’s width, hung slightly lower because you look at it seated. In open-plan living rooms, one wide canvas ties the sitting and dining zones together. On double-height walls, with ceilings over four metres, any standard size looks small: that is where a commission of 2 metres or more fills the wall in proportion.
Light on a textured wall: home decor that changes through the day
Living rooms in Spain get a lot of light, and it moves. With side light from a window, matter and relief cast small shadows that shift from morning to evening, so the work never looks quite the same twice. Flat, frontal light hides the surface; raking light brings it out. When you choose the wall, think about where the light comes from: the same canvas reads differently on a north-facing wall and a sunlit one.
Large abstract canvas art from the collection, modern minimalist in spirit
A selection of the larger pieces: each wall art canvas is original and signed, painted in 2026 in acrylic with matter, relief and asphalt paint. Together they form a collection of wall art in a modern style, without the expiry date of a trend: contemporary wall artworks, but quiet ones. The full wall art collection has all 13 pieces.

Wall decor for living room walls in a modern home: matching your colours
Good wall décor doesn’t need to repeat the colours of the room, but it should be in conversation with them, which makes this kind of art, abstract and organic, easy to match:
- Neutrals and earth tones: sand, off-white, ochre and warm grey for wood, linen and stone. Materia Serena suits a pared-back room and the calm of minimalism.
- Mediterranean blues: to bring the sea into bright, white living rooms; if you’d like something closer to a seascape, abstract rather than literal, see the sea paintings.
- Deep contrast: asphalt paint on canvas gives depth to a pale wall and a decisive note to a contemporary interior.
It is art, modern in language yet warm, so it sits as well in a cosy Spanish farmhouse as beside mid century furniture or a boho corner. The same guidelines also work on a bedroom wall or a modern wall in a study.
Wall decoration and canvas wall art: an original, not a canvas print
On a small wall the difference can go unnoticed; on a big one, it can’t. Search for a print for living room walls and you find the same modern print designs in every home, from typography, abstract floral motifs, the wildflower meadow and the bird silhouette to metal wall art or a large macrame wall hanging.
Large canvas prints vs one original painting on canvas
Living room prints, and prints for living rooms of every size, are easy to find, but Adriana’s works are not available as canvas prints. Wall art prints are flat and repeated in thousands of homes, like a large framed poster behind glass. A photo flattens the surface: this can’t be printed. An original has body, layers and a gesture that exists only once, and scale multiplies everything the surface has to say. It is decoration in the fullest sense, not decorative wall filler bought by the metre: real art, painted once.
Every canvas from Adriana is abstract work painted by hand, organic rather than abstract geometric or line art. It isn’t landscape painting in the literal sense: it starts from landscape, silence and the sea, and offers colour and movement you won’t tire of. Learn more about Adriana Fernández, the artist.
How to choose and buy with confidence: ready to hang, no guesswork
A big piece is something you see every day; it isn’t swapped like a cushion (if you are weighing up budget, see what goes into the cost of an original painting). The process is designed to remove that doubt:
- Free personal advice: send a photo of your wall and she looks at light, tones, furniture and scale. Personal reply within 24 hours, in English.
- A realistic simulation on your wall: see the work to scale next to your sofa or table before you decide. Request your wall simulation from the form.
- Nothing to frame: each work is stretched on a wooden stretcher frame, with paint and texture continuing around the edges. It travels across Spain with professional packaging, even the largest sizes.
- Signed, with a certificate of authenticity: an original, not a canvas print. Payment is by Bizum or bank transfer, directly with the artist, no middlemen.
Room artwork for the whole villa
Interior designers furnishing a villa can commission a piece to match a palette or a specific wall: the same logic, applied to the whole house, with one thread from the sofa wall to the dining area.
