You can’t really judge hand painted abstract art from a shop photo. You recognise it when it is in front of you: the matter stands proud of the canvas, each stroke has a direction, and the colour gathers in some places and thins out in others. Behind every gesture is a decision made by the painter, which is why no other home has the same painting.
This guide helps you tell a genuine original from the “hand-painted” pieces produced in series for decor, choose the right size and colour for your wall, and see how the piece will look in your room before you decide.
What hand painted abstract art really means
A hand painted original is a unique work of art. One person conceives the composition, prepares the surface and builds the painting up, layer by layer, until it is finished. There is no template and no repeat. In Adriana Fernández’s work, every piece is made in her studio in Ibiza town, with textured matter, relief and asphalt paint, and belongs to the Mediterranean Collection 2026.
This kind of painting doesn’t try to depict a recognisable object; it works with colour, texture and movement to express an emotion rather than describe a scene. In Adriana’s paintings that language speaks of the Mediterranean sea, the horizon, the slow erosion of the coast and silence. They are made to bring calm to a living room, a bedroom or a wellness space, and to sit easily with contemporary architecture. If you are still weighing up what makes a piece an original in the first place, our guide to what makes an original covers it; here the focus is on the hand-made process itself.
A painter’s original vs factory “hand-painted” wall decor
Plenty of wall decor is sold as hand painted, and in a sense it is: workshops repeat the same design dozens or hundreds of times, sometimes over a pre-marked base, offering the same composition in any size you like. It is perfectly decent home decor, but it isn’t fine art. The differences come down to a few points:
- One of a kind. An original has no copies. If you see the same design in several sizes and colourways, it is a product line, not a painting.
- Signature and certificate. Every work by Adriana is signed and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
- Texture you can touch. On an original the surface is real and uneven: ridges, grooves, smoother passages. Look at it in side light and you will see shadows that a flat surface simply can’t give.
- Intention. Each piece has a reason to exist. Silencio de Horizonte grows out of Mediterranean light; Equilibrio en Pétalos, out of coastal erosion.
- A named painter. You know who painted it, and you can talk to her directly. To find out more, meet Adriana Fernández.
How to tell if a painting is genuinely handmade
- Check the edges. On an original the paint and texture carry on around the sides of the stretcher, with the small irregularities of something made by hand.
- Look for real relief. Step to one side and look at the surface at an angle: the matter casts shadows and the paint has different densities.
- Ask for the signature and paperwork. An original is delivered with a certificate of authenticity.
- Ask about the work. Whoever painted it can tell you when, with what technique and why. All 13 pieces in the collection were painted in 2026.
- Be wary of endless catalogues. Hundreds of identical designs available in every size are a sign of production in series.
Technique: acrylic, texture and matter
Adriana paints by hand in acrylic, a medium that lets her work in layers, build up glazes and hold the matter in place, and that dries far faster than oil, so each layer keeps the energy of the gesture. Every stroke is expressive: it conveys the movement of water or wind rather than copying it. Over that base she raises texture with a palette knife, adds relief and darkens certain areas with asphalt paint. The result is colour and texture that change with the light through the day: in the morning the piece reads as serene; in low, raking light the relief fills with shadow. A photo flattens all of that, and no print can recreate it. That is the inspiration behind every textured abstract piece she makes: the Mediterranean as something you feel, open to your own interpretation.
If volume is what draws you, have a look at the textured paintings in the collection; if water is what moves you, the sea paintings gather its Mediterranean blues.
Original hand painted artwork from the Mediterranean Collection
The collection brings together 13 unique pieces, each with its own character:
- Silencio de Horizonte (160 × 80 cm): texture with transparent glazes, Mediterranean light on a large scale.
- Materia Serena (140 × 70 cm): neutral and beige tones with calm, organic textures.
- Geografía del Alma (139 × 90 cm): the place where land meets sea.
- Horizonte en Calma (120 × 90 cm): paint and matter.
- Límites, Horizontes and Límite Natural: paint, texture and asphalt paint, with contrasts of black and earth.
- Costa de Ibiza and Profundidades (105 × 104 cm): an almost square format that works as the centre of a wall.
- Equilibrio en Movimiento, a vertical diptych of two 50 × 70 cm pieces, and Equilibrio (two 60 × 50 cm pieces) to create a pair; Mareas Serenas, a set of 30 × 30 cm works in textured relief.

Scale matters more than colour. A useful rule of thumb: the painting should cover around two-thirds of the width of the furniture beneath it, whether that is a sofa, a sideboard or a headboard. Measure the wall and leave some breathing space around it. Adriana regularly paints formats up to 2 metres wide, and larger on commission. For a fuller guide with measurements, see sizes for large wall art.
- Living room. Above a three-seater sofa, a large format such as Silencio de Horizonte or Materia Serena anchors the room.
- Bedroom. Above the headboard, a diptych or a 120 cm horizontal piece in soft tones invites rest. There are more ideas in bedroom wall art.
- Hallway and landing. Smaller works, such as the Mareas Serenas set, are best enjoyed up close.
Choosing the colour for each room
A painting doesn’t need to repeat the tones of your home, but it should hold a conversation with them. Look at the floor, the textiles and the large pieces of furniture:
- Neutrals, beige and earth tones for minimalist interiors with wood, linen and stone. They bring calm and a timeless, modern feel.
- Mediterranean blues for bright rooms that want freshness.
- Black and earth contrasts, with asphalt paint, for pale walls that need presence and character.
Buy with confidence: a simulation on your own wall
The most common worry when buying original art in Spain is how it will look at home, especially if you live in the UK part of the year and furnish your house in Spain from a distance. That’s why the advice is personal and free of charge: you send a photo of your wall and Adriana looks at the light, tones, furniture and scale. She then prepares a realistic simulation of the work in your space, so you decide having seen it. Ask for your free wall simulation and you will get a personal reply within 24 hours, directly from the artist, with no middlemen. Everything can be handled in English, by WhatsApp or email.
Hand painted abstract art made to order
If none of the pieces suits your wall, Adriana can create one for you. With a commissioned painting, the format, composition and palette are agreed with you around your room, while keeping her own language: matter, calm and landscape. Every commissioned painting is made to order, from the first sketch to the signature. It is still a unique work, signed and with a certificate of authenticity.
Delivery and caring for your painting
Every painting arrives stretched on a wooden stretcher frame, ready to hang, with no need to frame it: the paint wraps around the edges, so it looks finished on the wall as it is. Delivery is available anywhere in Spain, with professional packaging. To look after it, dust it with a soft, dry brush, avoid damp cloths, and don’t hang it in strong direct sun for hours at a time or next to sources of heat or humidity. That way the texture and tones will stay as they left the studio for years.
